Subject: Tefillin
Dear Frumma,

What does it mean when my date keeps bringing his tefillin along on our dates?

Confuzzled Candice

Foncuzzled Candice,

Do seriously need me to take you aside, and teach you about the birds and the bees? There is one of two reasons as to why your date is bringing tefillin:

1. The date will end up, how do i say, as a kinda slumber party when he expects to wake up to you and pray the morning prayers a.k.a. Shacharit! In that case, you arent confuzzled -- he is.

Or Mr Overnighter is into 2. whips.

In either case, if you consider yourself seriously religious? Throw him OUT and DO NOT recycle.

Dr Frumma Ruth

Comments:

Sincere guys who live in the suburbs & who have an evening date with a woman in the city, may arrange to stay an overnight with an uncle or grandparent in the city - rather than risk getting into an accident when driving home late at night. In that case, they have a legitimate reason to take their tefillin in their car when they go on a date (but it's good etiquette to hide the tefillin (so as not to raise the kind of suspicions that Frumma has).

Somehow I don't think that is what Candice meant by, "Bringing tefillin along ON THE DATE"

I bring my tefillin on dates all the time. It's not because I'm promiscuous, it's because I'm busy, and I don't always have time to go home to put my tefillin away after Shacharit minyan.

What happened to giving someonethe benefit of the doubt? I know from past experience that sometimes it may not be possible to make it back home in the a.m. for Shacharit, and make arrangements to stay elsewhere, and bring along the tallit and tefillin.
